I had 4
hours break between my lectures yesterday, so I decided to finish the
book I stopped reading, which is the great Gatsby...

Summary
The Great Gatsby is widely regarded as one of the masterpieces of
American fiction. It tells of the mysterious Jay Gatsby's grand effort to win
the love of Daisy Buchanan, the rich girl who embodies for him the promise of
the American dream. Deeply romantic in its concern with self-making, ideal
love, and the power of illusion, it draws on modernist techniques to capture
the spirit of the materialistic, morally adrift, post-war era Fitzgerald dubbed
"the jazz age." Gatsby's aspirations remain inseparable from the
rhythms and possibilities suggested by modern consumer culture, popular song,
the movies; his obstacles inseparable from contemporary American anxieties
about social mobility, racial mongrelization, and the fate of Western
civilization. This Broadview edition sets the novel in context by providing
readers with a critical introduction and crucial background material about the
consumer culture in which Fitzgerald was immersed; about the spirit of the jazz
age; and about racial discourse in the 1920s.
Opinion
Sorry to say, but this novel is highly overrated, can't
understand why people love this book... I mean, what is so great about Jay Gatsby?
the guy dedicated his life to impress a shallow girl who he never got
her , then had a tragic end , he was murdered because of her , but she never
showed up at his funeral , actually no one went to his funeral .

An interesting fact : The iconic
blue cover of The Great
Gatsby was completed before the manuscript.
Designed
by the Spanish artist Francis Cugat (who later had a prosperous career
designing posters and graphic material for the movie star Douglass Fairbanks),
Fitzgerald was so taken with the image of a woman’s eyes crying a single tear
above a city skyline that legend has it the description of Daisy Buchanan as
the “girl whose disembodied face floated along the dark cornices and blinding
signs” was inspired by it and written into the book.
